Tyrol Castle
High above the rooftops of Merano
Once the residence of the counts of Merano, whose hereditary line has now died out, today it is a major state landmark and the headquarters of the South Tyrol Federal Museum for Culture and State History. That’s Tyrol Castle in the village of Tyrol, above Merano. If you’re interested in the history of South Tyrol, you should definitely take plenty of time to explore here, because there’s a lot to discover. As well as unique exhibits from all over South Tyrol dating from the Stone Age and the early modern period, you can also take in the historic castle walls and majestic great hall.
The Burghügel or sun terrace of Tyrol Castle has yet another highlight: the Bird Care Centre (Pflegezentrum für Vogelfauna Schloss Tirol). Experience real birds of prey and owls during flight shows that take place every day except Monday.
